SCSU Shows Well in 2-1 Loss to #15 Winona State
The St. Cloud State women’s soccer team played its home opener versus #15 Winona State University on Sunday afternoon in front of 163 spectators at Husky Stadium. The Huskies stuck with the Warriors until the end but were defeated by a score of 2 to 1.
Winona State struck first with a goal at the 11:26 mark. Preseason pick for NSIC Offensive player of the Year, sophomore forward Jennifer DeRoo put the Warriors up 1-0. Senior Melissa Sellier had an assist on the goal. Winona State went up 2-0 when senior forward Sarah Colleran found the back of the net at 54:51. Assisting on the Warriors second goal was sophomore Rebecca McCoy.
The Huskies made things close on a nice goal by senior midfielder Laura Moline at 73:54. She beat Warrior goalkeeper Anna Belpedio on a long kick that found the right corner of the net. Junior Mary Morhardt was credited with an assist on the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kenzie Hanzlik had seven saves on the day for SCSU.
The Huskies (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) next play on the road at Southwest Minnesota on Sept. 10 at 12:00 pm. Their next home match will be Sept. 17 at 1:00 pm, once again taking on Southwest Minnesota.
