SDSU Defeats Nevada on the Road, 2-1
RENO, Nev. – San Diego State sophomore Mia Root sparked the Aztecs offensively, setting up a pair of goals in a 2-1 road victory at Nevada Friday night inside Mackay Stadium. The much-needed win moved SDSU to 5-8-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the Mountain West.
Root got the Aztecs going in the fourth minute, streaking down the left side and centering a pass that skidded through the box. The service found the intended Laura Fuentes and the freshman put her shot into the back of the net. The goal was her second of the season and second in her last three games.
Just over 16 minutes later, Root found herself in nearly the same position, but this time the forward centered her pass earlier, finding Darcy Weiser, who one-timed it past Nevada goalkeeper Kendal Stovall from 13 yards out. The goal was Weiser’s first of the season.
The Aztecs carried its cushion into halftime, but the Wolf Pack sliced its deficit in half 2 minutes, 42 seconds into the second period. Nevada went on the attack and put a shot on goal only to have Payton Lieb corral the rebound and score her fourth goal of 2018. Angel Meriwether was credited with the assist.
SDSU shook off the initial disappointment of the goal and went back to work on defense, ultimately keeping Nevada off the scoreboard for the rest of the half to help the Aztecs earn their first win since a 1-0 decision at San Jose State on Sept. 28.
