SDSU Loses 2-1 Heartbreaker at FIU in OT
MIAMI – San Diego State gave up the tying goal in the 85th minute and Florida International used a bicycle kick in the first overtime period to rally for the 2-1 victory Friday night in Miami. The loss snapped SDSU’s five-game winning streak and as a result, fell to 5-2. The Panthers, meanwhile, improved to 2-3-1.
The Aztecs struck first in the 40th minute when David Olsen netted his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign. On the scoring play, the freshman put a foot on the ball and pushed his shot past the oncoming goalkeeper to give the visitors a one-goal cushion heading into halftime.
The second half featured back-and-forth action and San Diego State was poised to escape with its sixth consecutive victory. FIU, however, had other plans as Quentin Albrecht headed a service past SDSU keeper Adam Allmaras and into the side netting with 5 minutes, 21 seconds left in regulation.
Both teams played out the final minutes and the contest moved into overtime where the Aztecs notched the first shot. The Panthers took control from there, logging three shots over the next five-plus minutes with the deciding attempt coming in the 98th minute. On the winning sequence, FIU sent a cross into the box and Albrecht bicycle-kicked his shot into the goal to lift the home side to victory.
The defeat stopped the Aztecs’ longest winning streak (5) since the 2005 campaign when that squad also put up five straight victories. At 5-2, however, San Diego State has its most wins through seven games since 2011, when it was 5-1-1.
SDSU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Santa Barbara, California, to face UCSB. First tap is slated for 7 p.m. PT.
