SDSU soccer ties Oakland on cold night...
On a cold Friday night in Brookings, S.D., the South Dakota State women's soccer team could not heat up the net, tying Oakland, 0-0 (2ot)...
The Jackrabbits dominated the game statistically, but could not find the go-ahead goal.
SDSU outshot the Golden Grizzlies 17-5, including an 8-0 shots on goal advantage. In addition to the eight shots on goal, the Jacks had two shots hit the crossbar.
In the 84th minute, senior Kayla Braffet hit a shot from just outside the box. The ball cut through the air towards the far post, striking the crossbar and bouncing straight down before being cleared out by an Oakland defender.
In the second overtime period, sophomore Caylee Costello also had a shot hit the crossbar. The shot deflected away from the goal and out of danger.
Aside from two shots that were saved by Oakland's goalkeeper, these were the best scoring opportunities the Jacks had all night.
"In a game like this, the only thing that happens is you need a goal," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "A goal forces the defense to come out of that shell and it opens up more space. They were able to be effective packing it in and trying to counter. We were not able to break it down. The girls played a good game, but missed that scoring touch."
Seniors Braffet and Kelsey Ferguson led the offensive attack with four shots apiece. Junior Christa Nyblom took three shots, all of which were on goal.
The starters accounted for 16 of the Jacks 17 shots. SDSU also led in corner kicks, 3-2.
The defense had another solid game, as senior Kelli Herman, juniors Courtney Higgins and Stéphanie Bérubé and Costello anchored the back line for the Jacks.
Senior goalkeeper Kat Donovan was not forced to make a single save.
The only caution in the game was given to Oakland's head coach in the sixth minute.
"We played fairly well for most of the game," said Wedemeyer. "It was a little bit of a chess match. They played with five backs a lot of times, trying to stagnate our attack and for a good portion of the game it worked. We created enough opportunities to score a few goals, but it was the same story as the rest of the season; a little unlucky or a good goalkeeping save or just missing an opportunity. Oakland is a good team, but we are a bit disappointed with the tie."
The Jacks' record moves to 8-5-2, 4-0-1 in The Summit League.
Oakland moves to 4-9-1, 2-1-1 in The Summit League.
"4-0-1 is a good place to be, but it is not going to get us into the conference tournament," Wedemeyer said. "Sunday is that much more important now."
SDSU returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16, against IPFW. The Jacks face the Mastodons for the sixth time in school history. SDSU holds a 4-1-0 series lead over IPFW, but the teams split the last two games.
Las season, the Jacks needed an extra 37 seconds to beat IPFW 1-0 (ot) in Fort Wayne, Ind. Nyblom scored the game-winning goal on a header, assisted by Ferguson.
IPFW lost to North Dakota State 3-0 on Friday night in Fargo, N.D., to fall to 4-8-0 and 1-3-0 in The Summit League.
