The South Dakota State women's soccer team stumbled in its non-conference finale 2-1 at Creighton on Wednesday…

The Jacks led in shots and shots on goal, but did not capitalize and Creighton took advantage of its opportunities.

SDSU attacked early and often in the first half, with three shots, two on goal, in the first 12 minutes.

The two teams were scoreless through 39 minutes and it looked as though the game would be scoreless at halftime, but the offensive excitement was about to begin.

Creighton scored first in the 40th minute on a cross and shot from 25 yards out.

And once again, it looked as though the half would end with the Bluejays leading 1-0, but the Jacks responded with less than two minutes remaining.

Stacy Guijarro dribbled down the right side of the field, created some space and put a shot in the goal from 15 yards away. Sheridon Newberry was credited with the assist. The goal, Guijarro's third of the season, tied her for the team lead.

SDSU held the first-half advantage in shots (9-5) and shots on goal (6-3), but trailed Creighton in corner kicks (3-1). SDSU was whistled for four fouls and no offside, while Creighton was whistled for two fouls and two offside.

Megan Kingston led the Jackrabbit attack with three shots, all on goal.

Elisa Stamatakis made two saves in the first half.

Despite upping its lead in shots and shots on goal, SDSU once again allowed the go-ahead goal. Creighton’s forward took advantage of an opening and scored from 12 yards out in the 67th minute.

The Jacks had numerous chances in the final 20 minutes, but could not find the equalizer. The game ended 2-1 in favor of the Bluejays.

"I give a lot of credit to Creighton," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "They always find a way to beat us. We created enough opportunities to win tonight, but just cannot maintain focus for an entire game."

SDSU led in shots (14-8) and shots on goal (11-4), but trailed CU in corner kicks (5-1). SDSU was whistled for five fouls and no offside, while CU was whistled for six fouls and five offside.

Diana Potterveld led the offense with five shots, all on goal.

Stamatakis made two saves on the night.

SDSU dropped to 2-6-1, while Creighton improved to 3-5-2.

Next the Jacks take one and one-half weeks off from competition. SDSU returns to action in its Summit League opener at North Dakota State on Saturday, Sept. 29. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Fargo, N.D.
