SDSU Women’s Soccer Beats Wyoming, 2-1
LARAMIE, Wyo. – San Diego State sophomore forward Angela Mitchell scored twice to propel the visiting Aztecs to a 2-1 win at Wyoming Sunday afternoon. The victory ran SDSU’s winning streak to a season-long five games in a row and improved its overall record to 9-4 (5-1 MW). The Cowgirls, meanwhile, fell to 6-4-4 (2-3-1 MW).
San Diego State continued to execute its game plan of scoring early, this time punching in a goal in the 12th minute. Freshman Leah Pruitt recorded her third assist in her last two games when she found Mitchell, who put her shot into the back of the net. The goal was her fifth of the year and set a new single-season career high for the Corona, California native. As for Pruitt, the assist was her team-best ninth of the year and marked the third straight game in which she recorded a point.
The Cowgirls, however, got the goal back to tie the game in the 20th minute. Annika Clayton scored on a header off a corner-kick pass from Shaina Ashouri, which ended SDSU’s shutout streak that dated back to the MW opener at Boise State on Sept. 25 (San Diego State had blanked four straight foes). The goal came off the only shot Wyoming recorded in the half.
Less than five minutes later, the Aztecs moved in front once again thanks to Mitchell’s second goal of the game. The 25th-minute strike gave the sophomore a team-best sixth goal of the season. The assist was credited to classmate Aliyah Utush, who recorded her fourth of 2015.
The half ended with San Diego State ahead by one goal and the Aztecs were able to keep the advantage throughout the course of the second period to secure the win. In the final 45 minutes, the half was statistically even as each team took three shots and Wyoming attempted the only corner kick.
For the game, the Aztecs outshot the Cowgirls, 12-4, and held an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. As far as corner kicks were concerned, San Diego State earned three, while Wyoming attempted one in each half.
Individually, Pruitt outshot the Cowgirls, both in shots and shots on goal, by herself. The Rancho Cucamonga, California product attempted six shots with five on goal. Wyoming had four and two, respectively. Mitchell, meanwhile, took two shots, each of which ended in her celebrating successful attempts.
Goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn was once again stellar in between the pipes. The senior played all 90 minutes and made one save as she picked up win No. 9 on the year.
San Diego State returns home on Friday, Oct. 16, when it welcomes in-state foe, Fresno State. The game vs. the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck. Admission is free and the contest will also stream live online at GoAztecs.com via the Mountain West Network.
