Seahawks Drop Final Non-Conference Game
New York, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team fell in its last non-conference matchup of the season, losing to Ivy League member Columbia on Sunday afternoon by a score of 11-0.
The Seahawks will enter Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a 3-5-2 record, while the Lions improve to 5-4-1 on the season.
Wagner opens league play on Sunday, October 1 by hosting the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds in a 1:00 pm start at Hameline Field. The Green and White are one of six NEC schools with at least three victories on the season and are also tied for the league lead with three road victories.
Under first-year head coach Phil Casella, the began the year with a 3-1-2 record, which included wins over Delaware State, Rider, and Saint Peter's, as well as ties against Liberty and Iona.
This afternoon, the Seahawks fell behind early, as the Lions took a 6-0 halftime advantage, led by Emily Koe's two goals which opened the scoring. For the Green and White, freshman Mattea Reale(Ancaster, Ontario, Canada / Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School) and junior Sandra Battista(Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) had scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not convert.
In the second half, the Seahawks were led by freshman Madison Starr (New Canaan, CT / New Canaan), who led Wagner who had attempts. The Lions tacked on five goals in the second half, as Emma Anderson led the Lions with three goals on the afternoon.
In goal, junior Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ / Mater Dei Prep) led the Sehawks with six saves in the first half.
