Seahawks Earn Wild 2-1 Overtime Victory
Dover, DE – Sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Beck(Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) came forward 112 minutes into the game, converting on a direct free kick from 39 yards out to lift the Wagner College women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Delaware State Hornets on Sunday, marking the first collegiate head coaching win for first-year head coach Phil Casella.
With the victory, the Green and White move to 1-0-1 on the year as today's result follows a 1-1 tie vs. defending Big South champion Liberty in their season opener on Friday.
A defensive first half saw both teams combine for only five shots, including three attempts on goal. The first scoring opportunity for Wagner came roughly 10 minutes into the contest, but junior Kim Fetto's (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) attempt sailed wide. The only other attempt on goal in the first period came on a shot by sophomore Kaitlyn Ross (Sayville, NY / Sayville), which was turned away by the Hornets' goalkeeper.
The Seahawks then took the lead 61 minutes into the contest as a Fetto corner was converted by freshman Taylor Wasserman (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison) from 10 yards away for the 1-0 lead. It was Wasserman's first career goal, while Fetto picked up her first assist of the young season.
The visitors answered with just over 10 minutes to play as Samantha Bahr mustered the equalizer from eight yards away in tying the contest at 1-1, which proved to be the score after 90 minutes of regulation as Wagner was forced to play its second consecutive overtime contest. While Beck's first attempt of the extra period sailed high, she converted in the second overtime, scoring from 39 yards away for the game-winner 112 minutes into play.
Beck also finished with two saves in goal, coming in at the half for junior Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ / Mater Dei Prep), who also made two stops of her own in the first half.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, August 23 when they travel to Rider for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
