Seattle Men’s Soccer Defeats No. 10 UW
Seattle University men’s soccer (6-2-0) took the lead first and would regain the lead early in the second half for a 2-1 win over No. 10 Washington (4-1-2), handing the Huskies their first loss of the season. The record-breaking crowd of 1,700 plus was treated to the Redhawks’ first win vs. the Dawgs since returning to NCAA Division I play.
“I thought we played well against a high pressure, high intensity University of Washington team,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “I was pleased we moved the ball and created chances. If you can be successful against them, you can be successful against most teams in the country. For our program, we want to get better each week. I’m super happy for the guys because these guys came to Seattle U to beat UW. It elevates the program for the next one, because you’re going to measure yourself against Washington.”
After the Huskies evened the tally in the 29th minute, less than a minute after SU’s first goal, on a penalty kick, Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) scored the game-winner in the 47th minute off a Julio Rubio (Goleta, Calif.) corner kick.
David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) scored first in the 28th minute on a give-and-go from just outside the box with Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.) tallying the assist.
Seattle U outshot Washington, 23-7, including 11-2 in the second half, with shots on goal over the game, 12-2.
In goal for Seattle U, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made one save, allowing one goal, while UW’s Ryan Herman made 10 saves, allowing both goals.
The Redhawks now travel to No. 13 Oregon State on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. for a match that will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network Oregon. Links to live stats and the broadcast are on the men’s soccer schedule page at GoSeattleU.com.
