Seattle U Men’s Soccer Defeats No. 13 OSU
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Seattle University men’s soccer (7-2-0) fell behind late in the second half to No. 13 Oregon State (5-3-0) but came from behind on two late goals by Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) to defeat the Beavers, 2-1. The win in their non-conference finale marked the Redhawks’ second consecutive win over a ranked team after defeating then-No. 10 Washington at home on Thursday night.
“It was a terrific win and coming from behind is a very important skill to have in your toolbox,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “I was very pleased that, when we got the tying goal, we went for the next one. I’m glad that’s our mindset and that we never gave up. They didn’t want to go into overtime and I commend every one of the guys – the second goal, especially, by Kyle Bjornethun was a fantastic one and Shane [Haworth] made a couple big saves. I like where we’re going. It’s great to wrap up the pre-WAC schedule with five wins in a row, especially against teams like Harvard, Dartmouth, Santa Clara, Washington, and Oregon State.”
Oregon State’s Timmy Mueller broke the scoreless draw in the 77th minute with a header on a scramble in the box off one-touch assists from Jordan Jones and Mikhail Doholis.
Just over 12 minutes later, just a minute and 36 seconds before the end of regulation, Bjornethun retied the game, 1-1, on a scramble in the center on an assist from Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.).
A minute and 21 seconds later, just 15 seconds before the 90 minute mark, Bjornethun headed in the game-winner off a cross from Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.).
The two teams even in shots, 15-15, Bjornethun led the Redhawks with four shots while OSU’s Jones took a game-high seven.
Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) and Nolan Wirth each made three saves in the complete game outings in goal for the Redhawks and Beavers, respectively.
Seattle U returns home to Western Athletic Conference play next weekend vs. UMKC (Friday, Oct. 2 – 7 pm) and Air Force (Sunday, Oct. 4 – 1 pm).
