Seattle U Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker
A 94th minute Spartan on-goal opportunity proved to be the difference maker in Friday evening's match in San Jose, Calif. After battling back in the second half to even the game, the Seattle University men's soccer team was outlasted by MPSF rival San Jose State, 2-1, in overtime.
In the 55th minute, SJSU's Allen La Spina provided the Spartans with an early second half offensive lift. After a scoreless first half, Nick Cashmere dished off a pass to La Spina, who shot in the go-ahead goal to the far right post.
Following La Spina's goal, the Redhawks picked up their offensive tempo and their efforts were rewarded in the 79th minute. Junior Mikey Ramos (Spokane Valley, Wash.) picked up a loose ball and shot in his first career goal from the top of the 18-yard box.
In the final 10 minutes of the match, San Jose State possessed the ball in the Redhawk half and fired off four consecutive shots; however the SU defense was able to deflect their efforts and send the game into extra minutes.
Following a Renato Bandeira (Sammamish, Wash.) blocked shot, SJSU made the most of their final offensive opportunity. For the second time in the game, Cashmere connected with La Spina to score the game-winner with a shot high to the far post.
"It was a close game, as both teams had chances. I was really proud of the guys; we had a great chance of competing in overtime and let in a pretty soft goal. It was a great effort and something to build to on," said head coach Brad Agoos.
In the match, SJSU outshot SU 19-9, tallying an 8-6 on goal advantage. Also, earning their first start of the season was junior midfielder Bobby Segal (Portland, Ore.).
The Redhawks (1-6-2) will look to bounce back on Sunday, Oct. 9, as they close out their California five-game road swing at Sacramento State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. against the Hornets.
