#Seawolves fall at No. 8 UConn 3-0
Storrs, Conn. - The #Seawolves showed they could compete with one of the top programs in the country but in the end the no. 8 Connecticut Huskies were more opportunisic in the final third, winning the match 3-0. The game was much closer than the final scoreline. Stony Brook had a large chunk of the possession and generated many quality scoring opportunities.
Anatol's Reaction
"We stretched ourselves tonight against a quality opponent," said Anatol. "We had spells where we carried the game but they took full advantage of their opportunities. Ultimately, we will grow from this experience and use it to prepare and get better for our next opportunity.
Goal Recaps
- First team preaseason All-American Cyle Larin put UConn ahead in the eight minute on the Huskies first shot of the game. His shot appeared to carom off the underside of the crossbar and back into the field of play but the linesman ruled the entire ball crossed the goal line on the way down.
- The Seawolves hung tough but Cheikh Stephane Coley gave UConn a big goal with just over four minutes left in the first half when he slid and poked home a loose ball from a corner kick.
- Ethan Vanacoredecker deflated Stony Brook's bid for a comeback when he deftly chipped a hard charging Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) to give UConn a 3-0 lead.
Highlights
- Junior Jevaughn Vance (Arima, Trinidad) almost cut the lead in half with Stony Brook down 2-0 in the second half when he held up the ball with his back facing away from goal and turned and fired a shot, but it deflected just wide of the far post.
- Still down 2-0, junior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) unleashed a rasping shot from 30 yards out that was barley tipped over the crossbar for a corner kick.
Notes
- The shot totals tell the story better than the score. UConn outshot Stony Brook 14-11 for the game and led 7-4 in shots on goal but Stony Brook held a 9-5 advantage in shots in the second half. Additionally, they earned 10 corner kicks to just four for the Huskies.
- Giordano led the way with three shots and two shots on goal.
