Second-Half Goal Downs GSU at Northeastern
Boston, Mass.--The Georgia State men's soccer team conceded its first goal in three matches and could not overcome the deficit in a 1-0 loss at Northeastern on Saturday night.
The Panthers (8-3-1, 2-2) conceded at the 78:14-mark when Northeastern senior Ryan Burnham drilled a shot into the left side of the net off a corner kick. The ball deflected to him off a Panthers' defender after the Northeastern corner kick before Burnham ended GSU's streak of 241 straight minutes without allowing a goal.
"We knew what to expect from Northeastern on their home field and that's exactly what we got," GSU head coach Brett Surrency said, "We didn't play up to the high standards that we have this year. Credit Northeastern because they came out and played very well."
Sophomore Stephen McGill nearly got his foot on a dangerous cross from junior Gimel Gordon that would've knotted the game at one with less than three minutes left. But the Panthers couldn't capitalize on the chance and went goal-less for the first time in three matches.
McGill was the Panthers' leading shot taker on the day with five shots including one on goal. Sophomore forward Evan Scott and redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin each had two shots in the match. Redshirt freshman CJ Cochran made four saves in the losing effort.
Northeastern held a 15-13 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Northeastern (6-4-1. 2-2) has now won four consecutive matches at home against GSU and hasn't allowed a goal in those wins.
Georgia State returns to Panthersville for a two-game home stand beginning this Wednesday. The Panthers will look to bounce back Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Colonial Athletic Association opponent UNC Wilmington.
"The fact is we have to bounce back," Surrency said, "We knew that there were going to be ups and downs playing in this conference. The guys have it in them and they'll hold onto this tonight and be disappointed and tomorrow we'll turn our attention to UNC Wilmington."
