Second Half Goals Lift Eagles Over Scots
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Scots lost for the first time in four matches on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard as the visiting Reinhardt University Eagles scored twice in the second half to break a 0-0 tie and take the match by a score of 2-0.
Covenant drops to under .500 at 6-7-2 for the season while Reinhardt, who competes in the NAIA’s Appalachian Athletic Conference, improves to 9-4-1 on the year.
It took until the 54th minute of action for the first goal to be scored. Covenant was called for a handball inside the box which gave Reinhardt a penalty kick. Taking the kick was Jansen Berry and he slipped the ball past Scots keeper John Eger and into the lower left portion of the goal for the score to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
Reinhardt then added some extra cushion to its lead in the 74th minute with another score. Robert Roddie and John Connolly executed perfect passing inside the box and it was Connolly who found the back of the net for Reinhardt which gave the visitors a 2-0 edge.
It was a long night for Covenant offensively as the Scots produced just four shots for the match. Covenant’s only shot attempt in the first 45 minutes came off the foot of Gordon Carpenter as he nearly hooked the ball into the net from the far right side of the field in the 19th minute, but Reinhardt keeper Zack Schultze was there for the save.
Carpenter’s shot was the lone shot on goal attempt from the Scots on the night. In the second half, Tyler Morrison attempted two shots and Matt Hudnut had one of his own but all three shots were off the mark.
The Scots were outshot 14-4 on the night, but Eger did all he could as he saved 4 Reinhardt attempts. Covenant did have a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks over the Eagles.
Covenant will return to action on Saturday, October 29 when they host GSAC foe Huntingdon College at Scotland Yard. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
