Second overtime goal slips past 49ers, line
DAVIDSON, N.C. – In a typical Charlotte versus Davidson women’s soccer match, a battle in the midfield commenced Sunday evening with the Wildcats netting the lone score in a 1-0 double-overtime triumph over the 49ers at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C.
The Niners turned the ball over in the midfield and Jenni Isaac ran onto the loose ball. Isaac then ripped a shot from 25 yards out, directly at senior goalkeeper Alex Kubrick. Kubrick made the initial stop; however, the ball slipped between her mitts and by the time she recovered, it had just barely crossed over the goal line at 102:32 for the clincher.
Charlotte (5-3) had three looks at the net during the opening 45 minutes, though it was unable to convert. The 49ers’ defense held strong as well with it denying four Davidson chances as the teams entered the intermission knotted at 0-0.
Just over six minutes into the start of the contest, redshirt junior Jennifer Lee sent a shot high over the Wildcat cage. Two minutes later, Davidson (1-5-3) had a look off a free kick, though the Niners were able to stall any threat when Sarah Tuggle’s shot was turned away.
Redshirt freshman Nicole Anderson then placed the second Charlotte shot towards the frame, only to be swallowed up by netminder Rachel Locke just outside the post. The final 49ers attempt of the period came from freshman Perri Bonner, who received a loose ball near the top of the 18-yard box and then lifted the shot just over the crossbar.
Charlotte had the first three scoring chances of the second half, as Lee, sophomore Maddie Kiebel and junior Jessica Ryan all missed opportunities at putting the ball in the back of the net. The next four were by the Wildcats, including a pair of back-to-back shots in which Kubrick made a pair of spectacular saves.
With just over 23 minutes left in regulation, a loose ball down the right side slipped behind Kubrick after she charged at the Davidson attack. However, redshirt junior Taylor Dulaney was running in-stride with the Wildcats’ forward and was able to send the ball just wide to set-up a corner kick, instead.
A Davidson shot from 25 yards away with 10:41 remaining by Stephanie Piperno was sent directly into the waiting arms of Kubrick, who pounced on the attempt to prevent any rebound.
As the clock ticked under four minutes left in regulation, Becca Fisher broke free from the 49ers defense to send her shot just over the crossbar, allowing the game to remain scoreless. Ashley Finke corralled a loose ball and danced through the Niners backline with over a minute to play; however, Kubrick was unobstructed in making the key save and helping the teams enter the extra time.
In the overtime periods, neither team had much of an offensive look until the Wildcats scored the winner.
Charlotte will return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hits the road for Miami to face FIU in the Conference USA opener between league newcomers.
