SFA Dominates Jackson State In 8-0 Victory
August 20, 2012

JACKSON, Miss. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team added the finishing touches to a stellar season-opening weekend with an 8-0 victory at Jackson State Sunday afternoon.

Despite playing on a muddy pitch, the Ladyjacks’ offense proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers to handle for a second consecutive season. Last year SFA defeated the same Jackson State squad, 11-0.

“I was very happy with the mental approach and overall leadership we showed today,” Stephen F. Austin State head coach Tony Amato said. “To play on the road in sloppy conditions and get a positive result shows the character of our group. It was a great opening weekend to the season.”

Senior midfielder Kylie Louw collected six total points (4 assists, 1 goal) and set the SFA all-time, single-game assists record. The six points were also good enough for the third-most points in a contest.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Raymond, who scored a team-best 17 goals in 2011, scored her first two goals of the season and was joined in the scoring department by Megan Dunnigan, Ashton Norman, Zuri Prince, Ashton Norman, Zuri Prince, Laura Sadler and Breanne Vernon.

SFA (2-0) outshot Jackson State (0-2) 29-2 overall and 19-2 shots on goals. Ladyjacks sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Glick made her first career start and pitched a shutout while making two saves.

The Ladyjacks scored six first half goals beginning with Prince’s first of the season at the 5:59 mark on an assist from freshman Rachel Owens. Nearly 10 minutes later, Vernon scored a rare goal as a defenseman off a header on Louw’s first assist of the afternoon.

SFA put the game out of reach and out of hand quickly right before intermission with an onslaught of four straight goals separated by less than two minutes on each score. In the 36th minute Dunnigan scored her first career goal off another feed from Louw. One minute later Raymond entered the scoring frenzy with the Ladyjacks’ fourth goal of the afternoon on an assist from redshirt freshman Dallas Brown.

In the 38th minute Louw scored her first goal of the season and 21st of her prestigious career scoring from the left corner on an assist from Melissa Gaudet. Not two minutes later Sadler scored her second goal of the season on a set piece from Louw for the sixth and final goal of the half.

The Ladyjacks struck twice more in the final 45 minutes on a Raymond goal in the 49th minute off the first collegiate assist from freshman Ashton Norman, who in the 76th minute also scored the first goal of her SFA career on Gaudet’s second assist of the day.

SFA will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Fort Worth to take part in the TCU Invitational. The Ladyjacks will first face Texas Tech on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by the Horned Frogs on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
