SFU Closes Out 2011 With a 1-0 Loss to WWU at Terry Fox Field
Burnaby, BC – The SFU clan women’s soccer team finished their 2011 season with a 1-0 loss this evening to the Western Washington University Vikings at Terry Fox Field.
Seniors Amelia Ng (Richmond, BC) and Anna Brancati (Coquitlam, BC) were both recognized prior to the game as this evening was their last game in a Clan uniform.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw for most of the first half. That was until the 37th minute when Western Washington broke the deadlock.
Justina MacDowell took a shot from five yards out that went across the net and found the corner, past goalkeeper Amelia Ng, to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Neither team could muster any offence in the second half as the Vikings left Terry Fox Field with a 1-0 victory.
With the loss, the Clan wraps up their 2011 season with a 2-12-2 record.
“I think we’re the best last place team in the history of the GNAC,” said Head Coach Shelley Howieson after the game. “It was a tough season, we lost a lot of close games, but our team never stopped fighting. I think the experience we gained this season will lead to much more consistent performances next season, which should result in more wins.”
