SFU Earns a Tie Against Central Washington
Ellensburg, WA – Goalkeeper Amelia Ng (Richmond, BC) made 10 saves today as the SFU Clan women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against the Central Washington Wildcats. SFU’s record is now 1-9-1 on the season (0-8-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference) while Central Washington shifts to 6-3-4 this year (5-2-2 in the GNAC).
Ng was busy in the first half, making six saves to keep the score tied at 0-0.
Central Washington was awarded a penalty kick in the 71st minute after the referees called a hand ball against SFU. Carson McKole took the kick for CWU and put a good shot on net, but Ng made an even better save to deny McKole.
The dangerous McKole had four shots on goal today but she could have had more had it not been for Emma Cruckshank (Maple Ridge, BC) and Abbey Vogt (Burnaby, BC) who did a good job of containing her.
Kelsey Atherley (Port Moody, BC) was particularly strong for SFU today. Going head to head with Central Washington’s top players, Atherley made several great tackles at mid field to limit the Wildcats scoring opportunities.
“I felt like our team took a big step forward today,” said Head Coach Shelley Howieson. “It took a lot of character to get the result we did today, going to double overtime against a tough team. The girls played the full 110 minutes and performed well under pressure.”
Ng made a total of 10 saves in net for SFU while Kayla Lipston made one for Central Washington.
SFU will now return home next Thursday to take on Northwest Nazarene University at 5:00 PM at Terry Fox Field.
