Shaw's OT Goal Lifts Yale Over Northeastern
Yale’s road success continued at Northeastern in thrilling fashion. Lydia Shaw scored the game-winning goal with 5:19 left in the second overtime period as the Bulldogs knocked off the Huskies 2-1 on a chilly night at Parsons Field.
First-year Ellery Winkler set up the winning play when she sent a perfect long ball ahead to a streaking Shaw, who dribbled down the wing and fired a high shot over Northeastern goalkeeper Megan Adams. Shaw was immediately mobbed by her teammates.
The Bulldogs (5-2) have won three straight games, including two away from home.
“Tonight was a great advertisement for college soccer with both teams challenging each other on both sides of the ball,” said Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “Northeastern is a very good side with quite a few creative, attacking players. We are happy that our group was able to rise to the occasion and pick up a road win.”
Yale struck first when Sarah Jordan headed home a Chloe Laureano cross off a short corner kick at 32:08.
It stayed 1-0 until midway through the second half when Chelsea Domond fired a rocket into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
The Bulldogs had the only two shots of the first overtime before Shaw’s heroics.
Alyssa Fagel was strong in goal for Yale, making five saves.
“Our team has spoken quite a bit this season about using each practice and game as an opportunity to show our growth. Tonight, we were able to show growth on our transition to defending and on attacking and defending restarts,” Faherty said. “A game like tonight should give our group more confidence as the season continues. It’s also good for SJ and Lydia to score their first goals of the season, which highlights the balance of our attack.”
The trip was a homecoming for Faherty, who played for the Huskies and is a 1999 Northeastern graduate. It was his second time coaching against his alma mater. He took his Stony Brook team to Boston in 2017 but suffered a 1-0 defeat.
The Bulldogs are back in the friendly confines of Reese Stadium on Sunday, hosting Central Connecticut at 5 p.m.
“We will enjoy this win tonight and then our attention turns to another good team, CCSU, and Sunday’s game,” Faherty said.
