Shephard Scores Game-Winner in OT for Trine
ADRIAN, Mich. - Freshman Karston Shephard (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) stepped up just when the Trine University men’s soccer team needed it as he scored the game-winner just 1:11 into overtime to send the Thunder home with a 2-1 win over Adrian College. With the win, Trine assures themselves of a spot in the MIAA Conference Tournament.
Trine (12-4-2, 8-4-1) scored first as senior Foster Webb (Auburn, Ind./Dekalb ) scored unassisted just 3:50 into the game. Webb gathered in the loose ball and was able to chip it over the Adrian goalkeepers head for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs would tie the game up in the 43rd minute as they scored on their own chip shot from 30 yards out.
Neither team scored the game-winner in regulation as Trine held a 9-to-6 shot advantage in the second half.
It only took one shot in overtime to end it. Trine dribbled the ball up the far side of the side and fired off a shot, it deflected off an Adrian defender. From there, Shephard gathered the ball in, and from the top of the box fired a rocket into the lower left corner for his first goal of the season.
Senior Nick Thon (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) earned the victory as he made two saves in goal for the Thunder.
On the night, Trine outshot the Bulldogs 19-10, including 11-2 on net.
Trine will wrap-up their regular season as they host Kalamazoo on November 2 for a 7:00 pm game under the lights.
