Shutout streak continues as Clayton State women prevail 3-0
MORROW, Ga. – October 12, 2011 – It’s safe to say that the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team is beginning to hit on all cylinders.
The Lakers made it four straight victories – all by shutout – on Wednesday with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Georgia Southwestern in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field. The victory improves Clayton State to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the Peach Belt. It marks the most victories in a season for the Lakers since the 2007 season. In addition, the six shutouts so far this season are also the most since 2007.
Georgia Southwestern falls to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in the Peach Belt.
"It was a great performance by the squad tonight, and every Peach Belt victory is huge," said Clayton State head coach Gareth O’Sullivan. "We are happy to be .500 in conference play, and there is a lot to play for!"
The Lakers scored twice in the first half, followed by their third goal in the second half. Natalia Valentine gave Clayton State a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute with her ninth goal of the season off an assist by Luisa Alvarez. Six minutes later, Josefine Holsten scored off a left cross by Dior McGruder.
Becky Brown scored her first goal of the season for the Lakers in the 59th minute off an assist by Elisa Gyllin on a corner kick.
The Laker goalkeeper combination of Laoise O’Driscoll and Kasi Cross combined for the shutout. O’Driscoll extended her scoreless minute’s streak to 402 straight minutes. Amber Bahri recorded five saves for Georgia Southwestern, and Clayton State out-shot Georgia Southwestern 14-2.
Clayton State plays host to UNC Pembroke on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at Laker Field.
