Siena Downs Orange in Overtime, 2-1

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.- Siena (2-2-0) scored five minutes into overtime to hand the Syracuse men’s soccer team (1-2-0) its second loss of the season on Sunday, Sept. 4 at the Siena Turf Field. Junior Sindre Ek tallied the game-winner for the Saints.
Despite recording six shots in the first 20 minutes of the game, the Orange fell behind 1-0 after a Siena goal in the 30th minute. Saints redshirt sophomore Joe Miner received a cross from junior Sean Sullivan and beat SU senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger to put the hosts in front.
Syracuse didn''t back down and continued to apply pressure on the offensive end. In the 75th minute that persistence paid off. Freshman Skylar Thomas'' initial shot hit the post. A scrum broke out in front of the Siena goal and Thomas was there, heading it in to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Ted Cribley was credited with the assist on the play, his second of the season.
The two sides were still tied at the end of regulation and the match proceded to overtime. In the 93rd minute, SU had a great chance to win the game, but a shot by junior Louis Clark was turned away by Siena goalkeeper Jack Binks to keep the Saints alive.
In the 95th minute, Siena sophomore Mike Matera hit the goal post. Ek collected the rebound from Matera’s shot and fired it in for the game-winning goal.
Syracuse was the aggressor for the majority of the match, doubling up the Saints in shots, 22-11.
Boerger totaled two saves in the loss. Binks finished with five saves for the Saints to earn the victory.
The Orange returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 8 when it hosts Adelphi at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Thomas recorded a goal for the second consecutive game … Clark made his first career start for the Orange in the match … In addition, sophomore Stephen Krachie received his first starting nod of the season ... The game was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes due to poor weather conditions.
