Siena Duo Named To MAAC All-Rookie Team
For the second time in three seasons, Siena Men’s Soccer saw multiple players named to the MAAC All-Rookie team, as part of the league’s postseason awards announcement. Freshmen Aaron Martin and Birgir Thorsteinsson each earned a spot on the squad following the conclusion of the 2018 regular season, with both playing instrumental roles in the Saints’ offense throughout the year.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Martin set the program record for the most MAAC Rookie of the Week honors earned by one player and became the first Saint to win in back-to-back weeks, receiving the award on Aug. 27, Sept. 3 and Oct. 1. Finishing second on the team in goals scored and tying Thorsteinsson for second in points, Martin notched early-season non-conference scores in ties at Houston Baptist on Aug. 24, and Holy Cross on Aug. 31. His lone conference goal was a game-winner at home over Monmouth on Sept. 29. His offensive efforts also included a pair of assists and 15 shots, six of which were on-goal.
A product of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Thorsteinsson used a breakout performance in conference play to finish the season tied for the most goals and second in points on the team. After notching a score in the Saint’s season debut at Houston Baptist, Thorsteinsson notched a goal in the team’s 2-1 victory at Niagara on Sept. 26, helping them to open conference play with a win. His breakout performance came on Oct. 24 at home against Canisus, putting together his first multi-goal performance with both scores in a 2-0 victory over the Golden Griffins. Thorsteinsson tallied 18 shots on the season, including six on-net.
The pair led Siena to a 5-10-3 overall record, including a 4-6 mark in MAAC play. The team’s outcome surpassed their 2017 finish, doubled their wins in conference play and gave them three more victories on the Siena Turf Field than last season.
In addition to a pair of All-MAAC selections, Siena also placed eight players on the MAAC All-Academic Team, its most on the squad since 2015. Senior Marko Stojanovic earned All-Academic Team Honors for the third time in his career in the Green and Gold, while juniors Eamonn Conway and Conor McGlynn and redshirt-sophomore Alessandro Markovic received a spot on the squad for the second time, and junior Cristobal Toledo, redshirt sophomore Kent Mohlar, sophomore Andreas Rosnes and redshirt freshman Winston Bennett were selected for the first time.
