Siena Falls in Tight MAAC Quarterfinal Match
Making its first MAAC Tournament appearance since 2016 and the first under head coach Graciano Brito, Siena Men’s Soccer (2-5-1) played Spring 2021 Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac (6-1) close to the very end Sunday afternoon. The Saints fell to the Bobcats in a 1-0 decision in the MAAC Quarterfinals at the Quinnipiac Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium in Hamden, Connecticut as part of the teams’ first-ever postseason meeting.
With the Saints looking to avenge a 4-1 loss in Hamden during the regular season, the squads played to a scoreless draw during the first half, with the Bobcats holding an 8-3 shots advantage and drawing three corner kicks to Siena’s one. Four of the five combined yellow cards handed out in the match came during the first period, with the physical affair featuring 20 combined fouls.
After over a period-and-a-half of tightly-contested action, QU found the back of the net by way of David Bercedo receiving a pass in traffic from Domen Bozic and connecting a shot in traffic with the top left corner of the net. The Bobcats attempted 16 shots to just two from the Saints in the second half, holding a 24-5 advantage during the contest, including 10-2 on-goal.
Siena received two shots each from freshmen Cole Hellert and Jack Mendrysa during the loss, with sophomore Svavar Nokkvason also adding an attempt. Junior goalkeeper Greg Monroe put up a solid array of work despite allowing the goal, making nine saves to tie his second most ever in a match.
Quinnipiac advances to host Fairfield in the MAAC Semifinal round, while Siena’s season ends with an overall record of 2-5-1. Aside from advancing to postseason play for the first time in five years, the Green and Gold also posted a non-losing record at home (2-0-1) for the first time since 2014.
