Siena Plays Monmouth to Scoreless Draw
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men’s Soccer’s (1-2-1) Senior Day festivities were rained on by Mother Nature, but the team did not leave Hickey Field without a point Sunday afternoon, playing MAAC foe Monmouth (1-1-1) to a scoreless draw.
Playing in their second contest in what will be five matches in 12 days to round out the Spring 2021 regular season, the Saints aimed to rebound from a 4-1 loss on the road at Quinnipiac on Thursday. After honoring seniors Jacob Pacheco, Winston Bennett, and Maxim Umansky prior to kickoff, both teams settled into what would be an evenly contested match throughout its entirety.
Both teams attempted four shots apiece in the first half of play, with only one shot going on-goal. Monmouth out-shot Siena, 6-2, in the second half of action, with junior goalkeeper Greg Monroe making two saves to keep the game scoreless. The Hawks registered the only shot in the 20 minutes of overtime, with a downpour in extra time aiding in washing away scoring opportunities. There were just three shots on-goal in the entire contest, with two coming for the visitors and one for the Saints.
Despite being out-shot, 11-6, Siena held a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities, and committed 17 of the 27 total fouls. Sophomore defender Antonio Linge and freshman Forward Bilal Hersi each registered a pair of shots to lead Siena offensively.
Following their first draw since ending the 2019 campaign with one against Manhattan at home, Siena will prepare for two road trips in the final three games of the season. The Saints will first close out home action by hosting Saint Peter’s on Thursday, April 1, at 3 PM on Siena All-Access.
