Siena Women's Soccer Signs Six
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Women’s Soccer Head Coach Steve Karbowski has announced the addition of six incoming freshmen who are set to join the program this fall. Ryann Augstell, Darby D’Angelo, Sophia Dimkopoulos, Deanna Lomino, Jayanna Monds and Rachel Sullivan have all signed and returned their binding National Letter of Intent, and will comprise the Saints’ Class of 2021.
“We are excited and looking forward to this class arriving this fall,” said Karbowski, who recently completed his 18th season as head coach. “This group will provide a strong presence, athleticism, versatility, and depth defensively to go along with a technical, intelligent, and athletic punch offensively. In addition to their potential on the field, this group excels in the classroom and will all be great fits to the Siena College community with the high character and class with which they carry themselves.”
A Loudonville native, Augstell starred under the direction of former longtime Siena assistant coach Dan Lindemann (2006-14) at nearby Shaker High. The midfielder was tabbed a Fourth Team All-State, and an Albany Times Union, All-Section II and Suburban Council First Team All-Star after leading the Blue Bison to a 14-1-1 record last fall. Also heralded as a 2015 All-Section II and Suburban Council First Team All-Star, Augstell played her club soccer for the Latham Circle Soccer Club and New York Elite. She competed at the ODP state level for two years, playing in the 2015 National Championship.
“Ryann is a technically sound midfielder who can play with either foot,” noted Karbowski. “She plays simple, is possession-minded, and reads the game very well. Ryann is a well-rounded player who is deceptively quick, which enables her to play almost any position.”
A native of Deansboro, New York, D’Angelo was the 2016 Section II Class B Sectional Final MVP and a Second Team All-State selection after totaling 13 goals and nine assists for Clinton. A four-time Center State Conference and three-time Section III Class B All-Star, the midfielder amassed 68 goals and 44 assists spanning her five-year varsity career. D’Angelo won three NYSW and two Region I Championships during her nine years with the Syracuse Development Academy, and competed for five years at the state ODP level, capturing the bronze medal at the 2015 National Championship.
“Darby is a technical midfielder with great field awareness,” remarked Karbowski. “She has a great feel for time and space on the field, reads the defense exceptionally well, and has the ability to deliver any type of ball with great timing and pace. Darby can possess the ball equally well, as she can attack on the dribble or with the pass. She is a versatile, two-way midfielder.”
Dimkopoulos set a school record for a back with 43 points while leading Jamesville-DeWitt to consecutive Class A State Finals appearances and four consecutive Section III and league championships. The standout from Fayetteville, New York was named a Second Team All-State and a First Team Class A, All-CNY and All-League selection after scoring 13 goals last fall. Dimkopoulos earned a 2016 NSCAA Exemplary Senior Athlete Award, and teamed with D’Angelo on the Syracuse Development Academy squad. She also played three years of ODP at the state level, capturing a Region I title.
“Sophia is a tough and disciplined defender,” commented Karbowski. “She is technically sound, and can play equally well with either foot. Sophia is a composed, possession player with the ability to strike a long ball in the run of play or on a free kick situation. She brings a winning mentality, having enjoyed success at every level that she’s played.”
A native of Hopewell Junction, New York, Lomino was a three-time All-Section and All-League selection for John Jay. The back was named a 2016 Poughkeepsie Journal First Team selection and a member of Section I’s Elite 12. Lomino most recently played her club soccer for World Class after spending the previous eight years with the East Fishkill Power. She also played two years of ODP at the state level.
“Deana is a very focused and driven player,” explained Karbowski. “She has a great attitude, and makes every play with commitment. Deanna is athletic and versatile to play across the back line, and can also step into the midfield as an attack-minded player with good pace. She is a great fit with her commitment to the game and responsibility to details.”
Monds amassed 73 goals and 34 assists spanning a highly decorated five-year varsity career at Westhill. The striker from Syracuse was named a 2016 Class B First Team All-State selection and the Onondaga High School Liberty League Player of the Year after guiding her school to New York State Class B Section III and Regional Championships. A three-time All-Central New York, All-New York State Section III, and First Team All-League selection, she joined D’Angelo and Dimkopoulos on the Syracuse Developmental Academy last year after spending the previous 10 years with the Syracuse Soccer Academy. Also an accomplished track star, Monds holds Westhill’s school records in the 4x200 relay, 55 and 300-meters dashes, and 55-meter hurdles. Her older sister, Tatiana, plays lacrosse at Richmond.
“Jay is a striker with great pace and the ability to score goals in a variety of ways,” said Karbowski. “She has the speed and ability to beat players 1v1, and can also attack the ball in the air and score with her head. Jay brings a dynamic and potential to be a top offensive player in the MAAC.”
A native of Leesburg, Georgia, Sullivan has tallied 50 goals and 54 assists entering her senior season this spring at Deerfield-Windsor. The midfielder was named the GISA Region 3 Player of the Year last spring, and is a two-time All-State and four-time All-Region selection. Sullivan played her club soccer for United Futbol Academy.
“Rachel excels in the middle of the field, both in attack and defensively,” noted Karbowski. “She has the presence, skill and vision to control the game through her distribution, and also adds a physical presence in the air and on the defensive end as a ball winner. Rachel has a great combination of talent, which makes her versatile in any spot from center back to attacking mid.”
The Class of 2021 joins a Siena Women’s Soccer program which posted a 9-7-3 overall record last fall, and tied a school record for both best MAAC finish (second) and most conference wins (seven). The Saints are set to return nine starters and 90% of their goal scoring, along with their entire goalkeeping corps.
