SIUE, Wisconsin Tie 1-1
Sept. 18, 2011
CHICAGO - Derek Huffman provided the game-tying goal Sunday as SIUE and Wisconsin settled for a 1-1 tie at the Chicago South Loop Hotel UIC Classic.
Huffman scored with exactly five minutes to play, answering a late goal by Wisconsin. Huffman headed in a ball off a throw-in from Nash Maduekwe. SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish said he was pleased with the team's resilience and character in coming back from a late goal.
"It was a good response after Wisconsin went up 1-0," he said.
The Cougars, now 3-2-2 overall, outshot the Badgers 11-8, including four shots from Huffman. Brian Groark also added a pair of shots for SIUE. Kalish said SIUE dictated much of the play with its ball circulation and possession-style play.
"At the end of the day, we got the chances we needed," he said.
Wisconsin, 3-3-1, was able to take the lead late with a goal from Chris Prince at 82:47. Prince headed the ball in off a service from the wing from Tomislav Zadro.
A light but steady rain accompanied the game but that didn't bother the Cougars. "We're real close," said Kalish. "We're making progress and getting better as a team."
SIUE returns home this week for a pair of games at Ralph Korte Stadium. The Cougars face Belmont in a 7 p.m. game Thursday. SIUE takes on Lipscomb in a 7 p.m. contest Saturday.
