SIUE's Pelley Sets Shutout Record
TULSA, Okla. – Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley set the SIUE record for career shutouts in a scoreless tie at Oral Roberts.
The Cougars, who are now 0-2-2 on the season, have their second shut out tie of the year. The first came Aug. 23 against Indiana.
"Any time you have a career record, the first thing you think about is consistency," said Head Coach Derek Burton. "Jen certainly has ability and she has continued to grow as a goalkeeper and a leader. She's been remarkably consistent. This record is a testament to her consistency, work ethic and competitiveness."
The shutout marks the 23rd of Pelley's career, which surpassed Stephanie Kult's record of 22 from 1993-96.
Pelley again showed her prowess between the posts by stretching to make a save in overtime, giving her team the opportunity for a win. She tallied five saves in the game. Despite earning the record, Pelley deflects the praise to her teammates.
"This record speaks volumes of the growth of our defense," said Pelley. "While the record says my name, I'm only as good as the opportunities I get. I'm just proud of how much our defense has grown in the time that I've been at SIUE."
Despite the result of the game, Burton continues to be pleased with the growth he sees in his team. The Cougars totaled nine shots on goal, including three from sophomore Emily Grahl.
"We started the game well and we started the second half well, which is a step forward," said Burton. "We created a lot of quality chances. The next step is to put those away and take chances when we have them."
The Cougars travel to Chicago for a Friday match-up against UIC. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
"We continue to make positive strides," said Burton. "Results will come as long as we keep making progress."
