Smith's Three Goals Lead Monarchs Over UNCW, 3-2

SMITH’S THREE GOALS LEAD MONARCHS OVER UNCW, 3-2
NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion’s (7-2/3-1 CAAA) junior forward Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) scored three goals, the Monarchs then held off a late UNC Wilmington (3-8/1-4) rally for a 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory Saturday night. Senior Tommy Webb (Auckland, New Zealand) assisted on two of the goals for the 21st ranked Monarchs.
This was the fourth multi-goal match for Smith this season who now has a team best 11 goals.
The Monarchs led 3-0 as Smith scored with less than two minutes left in the first half on an assist from
from Ivan Militar (Szeged,Hungary). He then added his second goal three minutes into the second half on a pass from Tommy Webb. The two hooked up again five minutes later for Smith’s third goal.
Earlier this year Smith scored three goals in a game against Houston Baptist, as well as two in a match at
Elon and earlier this week against VCU.
UNCW mounted a rally in the final four minutes of the match when Shawn Guderian scored on an assist
from Daniel Roberts. Roberts then cut the ODU lead to one goal on a penalty kick less than a minute
later.
ODU outshot UNCW, 11-7 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal. UNCW’s Brandon Miller had four saves, including a stop on Tim Hopkinson’s (Nottingham, England) penalty kick while ODU’s Victor Francoz had two saves.
ODU returns to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va. against the Tribe of William and Mary.
