SMU Dominates No. 16 Oklahoma; Draws 0-0

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team dominated the scoresheet, but played to a 0-0 draw against No. 16 Oklahoma Sunday night at Westcott Field.
SMU (1-0-1) outshot Oklahoma, 20-8, with seven shots on frame.. Allie Thornton, one of seven Mustangs to record a shot, paced SMU with eight total shots, including three on goal. Senior Claire Oates and freshman Isabelle Nashmi, each recorded three shots, with Nashmi tallying two shots on goal.
Catie Brown, along with the backline, pitched the second shutout of the year, allowing just eight shots, two on goal, and one corner kick.
SMU controlled much of the possession in the first half, outshooting the Sooners (0-1-1), 7-1, and forcing three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
The Ponies had a few opportunities in the first half, including a saved header by Thornton in the 23rd minute and a saved shot by Haley Thompson in the 31st. Thornton paced the Mustangs in the opening 45 minutes, with four shots and one on goal. Three other Mustangs recorded shots, with Thompson the only other player to put a shot on frame.
Coming out of the halftime break, SMU tacked on eight more shots to outshoot the Sooners, 8-7, in the second half.
In the 68th minute, Thornton found space behind OU's back line and took an uncontested shot, but McKinley Crone managed to wrangle it in. Three minutes later (71st), Vanessa Valadez beat the Sooner defense and curled a shot on goal, but Crone managed the save.
In the 73rd minute, sophomore defender Katharine Herron extinguished an Oklahoma scoring opportunity and saved a ball that squeaked past a charging Brown by Rasha Roberts.
In overtime, the Mustangs controlled both 10-minute periods, outshooting the Sooners, 5-0, but couldn't get manage an on-frame attempt.
Up next, SMU hits the road with a pair of games in Washington. The Mustangs open at Gonzaga on Thursday at 9 p.m. CT/7 p.m. PT, before crossing the state to play at Washington on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT/12:30 PT.
