Soccer Falls at Akron, 3-2
AKRON, Ohio -- The Morehead State soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback to Akron on Friday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Eagles are now 0-1 on the season, while the Zips start 1-0.
Morehead State sophomore defender Macy Cobb and freshman forward Kimberly Golden each tallied their first goals of the season in the contest.
“I’m happy with the progression we made from the Evansville exhibition,” said Head Coach Warren Lipka. “Our first-year players, especially Teig Palmateer, Karen Hilt and Kim Borys, played great for us.”
The Zips got the scoring started 17 minutes into the match when they capitalized on a through ball into the right side of the box. Freshman forward Megan Waskowski brought the ball inside the six-yard box and beat freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seeman near post.
It didn’t take the Eagles long to respond, and on their fifth corner kick of the match, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth McSparin played a ball into the six that found the head of Cobb.
Akron struck next, in the 29th minute, after a miscue in the back left Seeman with a pair of Zips at the top if the box. Freshman midfielder Lexa Green came out of the collision with the ball and dribbled her way into the Eagle net.
The final goal of the first half also came from the Zips, with just over two minutes to play, off another through ball to sophomore defender Hailey Kirkwood. The goal gave Akron the 3-1 lead heading into the break.
It was the Eagles, though, who got the second half started. Sophomore midfielder Holly Tilley found McSparin on the back post, but the goal was disallowed due to a hand ball. Tilley wouldn’t let that stop her as she played another ball into the box just minutes later and found Golden, who connected to bring the Eagles within a goal again.
“We played an above average game, but came up just short,” added Lipka.
The Eagles stay on the road for a match at Kent State on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available at www.kentstatesports.com.
