Soccer Opens Preseason With 2-1 Win Over NWS
August 15, 2012

HOUSTON – After the start time being pushed back due to a weather delay, the University of Houston soccer team was unfazed and went on to defeat Northwestern State 2-1 in an exhibition match at Robertson Stadium on Saturday night.

With only eight days of training, head coach Chris Pfau was happy with how his team played and sees the game as another piece of the puzzle.

I’m very happy with the team’s performance today,” Pfau said. “I saw a lot of great things that we can continue to build on. I want to keep adding to the foundation each game.”

The Cougars set the tone early, controlling the field for most of the first half, but due to a mental mistake, the Demons struck first in the 13th minute. Houston’s first goal would come in the second half on an own goal.

With the scored tied, the Cougars saw the opportunity and surged on. Senior Katelyn Rhodes would finish the scoring at the 80:41 mark with a high flying ball over the goalie’s head.

“That goal took a lot of hard work between me, the midfield and the other forwards,” Rhodes said. “We all did exactly what we needed to execute.”
