Sooners Pull Past Colonels, 3-1
NORMAN, Okla. – After falling behind in a 2-0 deficit, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team was able to pull within one goal of Big 12-member Oklahoma with over 35 minutes remaining in the second half, but a 75th minute goal sealed a 3-1 Sooner win Friday night in Norman.
After the two first half Oklahoma (2-1) goals, freshman Spencer Valdespino scored her first goal as a Colonel (1-2) in the 55th minute with a 28-yard strike ten minutes into the final frame of the game to make the score 2-1.
Oklahoma's Kelly Price had already struck for the Sooners in the 36th minute to put the home team up by two, but was not done scoring on the night as she came back in the 75th to find the back of the net for the second time for the game's final score. Price only took two shots on the night and scored both in just 39 minutes of action.
The Sooners peppered Nicholls starting goalie Amanda Boylson on the night to the tune of 16 total shots, with nine shots on goal, and had six offside penalties. Boylson finished with six saves on the night, with three in each half, while the Colonels managed seven shots, with five shots on goal. Valdespino had five of Nicholls' seven shots, and three of their five shots on goal as Melissa Pestalozzi and Lauren O'Brien had the other two.
Oklahoma scored the first goal of the game on a penalty kick from Renae Culler for her third goal of the season in the 22nd minute.
The Colonels will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, remaining in the state of Oklahoma to take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 2 p.m.
