South Florida defeats Boston College, 3-2
The Boston College women's soccer team lost for only the second time this season, 3-2, against South Florida on Thursday night in front of 223 fans at the Newton Soccer Field. BC is now 7-2 on the season and will host No. 5 Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. USF improved to 4-3-1 on the season.
Senior Stephanie McCaffrey scored two first half goals for the Eagles. She now has six goals on the season.
The Eagles striker scored just 31 seconds into the game. She picked up a loose ball and cut to the middle of the field. McCaffrey ripped a right-footed shot into the top right corner from 23 yards out for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
In the 26th minute, McCaffrey struck again. Lauren Bernard won a 50-50 ball to the right of the USF goalkeeper outside the box. She found McCaffrey who dribbled towards the goal and found the right corner for the second time in the game for a 2-0 BC lead.
The game changed early in the second half as South Florida went on the attack. Off a corner kick, Cristina Ferral ripped a shot from the corner into the far post to cut the Eagles lead to one, 2-1, in the 49th minute of play. A little over a minute and half later, Leticia Skeete tied the game as she placed the ball into the right corner.
In the 56th minute, BC's goalkeeper Alex Johnson came out of the goal to clear the ball and was injured on a collision. Freshman Darien Dunham subbed in for the second appearance since arriving at the Heights in September.
The game-winning goal came in the 79th minute when USF won two consecutive corner kicks. The first attempt BC kicked out but the second one proved to be a game changer. Sarah Miller out-jumped two BC defenders to head the ball right over the out-stretched hands of Dunham.
The Eagles best chance to tie the game came in the final minute of the game. Jill Lutz cracked a header off the crossbar.
South Florida had a 10-8 edge in shots taken, while BC had seven corner kicks and the Bulls had six.
