St. Cloud State Falls in Home Opener on Sept
The St. Cloud State soccer team (1-1-1) opened its home season with a tough 3-1 loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Sept. 3 at scenic Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Mustangs opened the game's scoring at 4:28 with an unassisted goal by Kendahl Fisher. SMSU pushed its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Kayla Williams at 26:43 of the game. The goal gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
In the second half, SCSU broke the shutout at 67:42 with a goal by Baily Drayton. The solo assist on the play was marked by Caroline Henderson.
SMSU iced the game at 86:37 with another unassisted marker by Williams to make the final 3-1.
In the nets, Julia Clifford allowed two goals for SCSU in the first half. In the second half, SCSU's Kenzie Hanzlik entered the game and made two saves and allowed one goal. Sonya Smith made four saves in the win for SMSU. Of note, SCSU outshot the Mustangs 12-11 in the game.
SCSU will continue its season on Sept. 9 with the NSIC opener at Minnesota Duluth.
