St. Cloud State gains home playoff spot with win over Augustana

Sioux Falls, S.D. - The St. Cloud State University soccer team completed its regular season in top fashion on Sunday, Oct. 30 with a huge 1-0 victory at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The victory improved SCSU's overall record to 10-7-1 overall and 7-5-1 NSIC.  The victory also provided the Huskies with a chance to host the University of Mary in the first round of the NSIC playoffs at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.

SCSU gained the first round home game thanks to the fact that the Huskies owned the tie-breaker against Mary in the season standings, as both squads ended the year with a 7-5-1 record in NSIC play.

The win at Augustana was also crucial as it moved the Huskies into fourth place ahead of the Vikings.  As SCSU and Augie headed into the game on Sunday, Augustana owned a 7-5 record and SCSU was 6-5-1 in the NSIC play.

The Huskies gained the win by viture of an unassisted goal at 25:07 by senior Laura Moline (Eden Prairie).  The goal was all the Huskies needed as sophomore netminder Kenzie Hanzlik (Stillwater) notched her team-record ninth shutout of the 2011 season in the contest with five saves to her credit.

This was Moline's second goal of the season and her sixth point of 2011.  Hanzlik now has 78 saves in 2011 with a 1.09 goals against average.  Hanzlik has allowed only two goals in the Huskies' last seven games.

Of note, SCSU has now won six consecutive games and the Huskies are unbeaten in their last seven outings.  The last SCSU loss was a 2-0 setback against Winona State on Oct. 8.

In the game at Augie, the Huskies were outshot by the Vikings 15-10.

The NSIC tournament quarterfinals will begin on Wednesday, November 2nd at the top four seeds. The semifinals will be played at the highest remaining seed on Friday, November 4th. The NSIC Women's Soccer Championship will take place on Sunday, November 6th at 1:00 p.m. at the same site as the semifinals.

Winona State enters the tournametn as the top seed as they won their 8th straight NSIC Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday.  The Warriors will host the eight-seed of Upper Iowa on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. 
 
The number two seed Minnesota State will host seventh seeded Bemidji State at 1:00 p.m.; third seeded Minnesota Duluth will host sixth seeded Augustana at 1:00 and St. Cloud State, the fourseed will host the University of Mary, the fifth seed at 5:00 p.m.
 
Tie-Breakers: St. Cloud State won the tie-breaker over U-Mary in head-to-head competition. Augustana won a three way tie with Bemidji State and Upper Iowa in goal differenial. BSU won tie-breaker over Upper Iowa in head-to-head competition.
 
The winner of the 2011 NSIC/US Bank Women’s Soccer Tournament will earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament. The full championship selections will be announced on Monday, Nov. 7 via a webcast selection show on www.NCAA.com. The regional tournament will begin November 11 & 13 at regional campuses.
