Stags Have Win Streak Snapped 4-1 At Marist
The Fairfield University women’s soccer team saw its four-game win streak come to an end by the score of 4-1 at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Marist College Friday night. The loss drops the Stags to 7-4-2 overall and 4-1-0 in league play, while the Red Foxes improve to 10-5-0 on the year and 4-0-0 in conference action. The two teams are tied for first place in the league with 12 points apiece.
The Stags played from behind for nearly the entire game Friday night as Marist wasted little time in getting on the board. The Red Foxes earned a corner kick 40 seconds into the game, which Samantha Panzner placed on the head of Marjana Maksuti for the first goal, 50 seconds into the game. Marist added a goal at 18:37 on a penalty kick from Amanda Epstein and Rycke Guiney scored an unassisted tally at 32:38 to give Marist a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Red Foxes extended that lead to 4-0 early in the second half as Epstein scored for the second time on the night. Fairfield got on the board in the 78th minute via penalty kick as Nikki Stanton converted for her second goal of the year.
The Stags were doubled in shots, 14-7, which was the same number of fouls committed by each team. Marist had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks and both teams recorded three saves.
Kathleen Early took the loss for Fairfield, stopping three shots in playing the entire 90 minutes. Andrew Wicks stopped three shots to earn the win for Marist.
Friday night’s game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Stags, who get back on the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. at MAAC foe Siena. The Saints tied Iona 1-1 in double-overtime on Friday afternoon and are 5-7-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in league play.
