Stags Put Best Foot Forward With 4-1 Win On
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The national audience on ESPN3 got to see the best game that the Fairfield women’s soccer team has played all season. Four different Stags tallied a goal and three different Fairfield players recorded an assist, as the Stags netted a season-high four goals in a 4-1 road win against Canisius. With the victory, the Stags are now unbeaten in five of their last six matches and have now won six-straight games against the Griffs.
“Our trips to our MAAC opponents on the road are always very challenging and wins are always hard to come by,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien said. “It is always exciting to appear on live video and the team was excited to put their best foot forward and they were successful tonight.”
In a cold and rainy Buffalo, N.Y., night, the Stags (4-6-2, 1-1-1 MAAC) dominated the entire match throughout. Fairfield started the scoring just the way they finished last game, with a Jenny Jacobs goal, 24 minutes into the match. Jacobs hauled in a pass from Holly Habyan for her second score in as many days, and Habyan’s assist was the first point of her career.
Less than five minutes later, Brenna Brown received a pass from Elena Santos on the near post and finished in the net for her fourth goal of the season.
After the first half, the Stags had more goals (two) than Canisius had shots (one). Fairfield out-shot the Griffs 10-1 in the opening stanza
The second half started the same way. Maggie Walsh notched her first career goal just 65 seconds as she launched a pass from Brown to give the Stags a 3-0 lead.
After surrendering a goal, the Stags completed their scoring barrage when Santos recorded her second assist of the contest (and third in her last two games), when she hit the ball over to Cassidy Boegel who notched her second goal of the season.
The four goals is a season-high for the Stags, who got production up and down their roster.
“It’s great to see the balanced scoring like we had tonight,” Coach O’Brien said. “We have many weapons at our disposal, from our back line through the middle and up front in attack.”
On the defensive side, the Stags would not let Canisius get any chances. Fairfield held Canisius to just four shots, a season-low for an opponent.
With the victory, the Stags are now unbeaten in five of their last six matches and won their sixth-straight against the Griffs. All-time in the series, the Stags are now unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 matches.
The Stags, who have now scored a goal in seven-straight games will return home for a match against Iona on Wednesday at 7pm.
