Stony Brook battles Duquesne to 1-1 draw
Senior Steve Medwinter scored his first goal as a Seawolf to help the Stony Brook men's soccer team achieve a 1-1 tie against Duquesne Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Duquesne Invitational.
"I thought the guys responded well after Friday night's disappointing result," head coach Ryan Anatol said. "I thought we had the better of the chances in this game, and I thought we outplayed our opponent for most of the game, but after we scored, the game got away from us a little bit, and we gave them a chance to get back into it. We have to learn how to finish games off."
After a strong first half that included a few strong chances at a goal, the Seawolves finally lit the scoreboard when in the 53rd minute Medwinter retrieved a loose ball off a throw-in and swatted it into the bottom right corner of the goal about eight yards out.
For the next 20 minutes, it looked like that score would hold up, but Duquesne finally made noise in the 72nd minute as Simon Gomez took a cross from Sean Gardner and headed the ball past junior goalkeeper Stefan Manz for the equalizer.
The match went into overtime, and Stony Brook had the best opportunity to win during the second extra frame when senior Kyle McTurk had a 105th minute shot that Dukes goalkeeper Colin Thorp stopped.
The statistics in the match were very even. Both teams finished with 15 shots and five shots on goal. Both goalkeepers made four saves. Duquesne had three corner kicks to Stony Brook's two.
The Seawolves will be back on the field next week when they travel to High Point, N.C., to participate in the Flash Gordon Invitational. They will take on host High Point Friday night at 7 p.m., and then play Radford Sunday at 12 p.m.
