The Stony Brook men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers Friday evening in the first match of the Duquesne Invitational.

"We're disappointed with the result," head coach Ryan Anatol said. "It was not our best performance. We didn't come out sharp. But we had enough chances that the result could have gone our way."

The Seawolves had seven shots on goal in the first half, including three by sophomore Will Casey, who had the team's best chance. Three minutes after subbing into the game, he had a shot that Panthers goalkeeper Lee Johnston made a terrific save on to maintain a scoreless tie. Casey had two more chances before the end of the period that Johnston stopped.

In the 59th minute of the match, Pittsburgh's Terry Akpua shot the ball at the net, and Seawolves junior goalkeeper Stefan Manz made the save, but couldn't hold onto the ball. The rebound sputtered out to Nico Wrobel, who put it past Manz for the match's only goal.

Stony Brook had one final opportunity late, but sophomore Marc Godelman's 87th minute shot was blocked, and two corner kick opportunities failed to produce a goal.

The Seawolves outshot Pittsburgh 19-11 and had 11 corner kicks to Pittsburgh's one. Johnston finished with seven saves for the Panthers, and Manz had two saves for the Seawolves.

Stony Brook will resume play in the tournament Sunday against host Duquesne at 1:30 p.m.
