Stony Brook blanked by Radford
High Point, N.C. - Radford's Rad Gwanzura scored a hat trick to lead the Highlanders to a 3-0 win over the Stony Brook men's soccer team Sunday at the Flash Gordon Invitational on the campus of High Point University.
"I thought Friday night's game took a lot of us both physically and mentally," head coach Ryan Anatol said. "Unfortunately, we had a few lapses today that ended up costing us. I thought the game was a lot closer than the score indicated."
The Highlanders got on the board in the 17th minute when Gwanzura headed in a short cross for a goal. In the 21st minute, Gwanzura scored again on a deflection off a 15-yard kick.
Stony Brook nearly cut the deficit to one goal late in the first half, but junior Cristian Quevedo's (Smithtown, N.Y.) shot in the 43rd minute clanged off the crossbar.
In the second half, the Seawolves poured on the offensive pressure, outshooting Radford 13-7, but none of the shots found the back of the net. In the 53rd minute, junior Leonardo Fernandes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a shot saved by Radford's Ryan Taylor. A minute later, sophomore Will Casey (Setauket, N.Y.) had a header chance that Taylor also stopped.
Late in the contest, Gwanzura completed the hat trick with an 83rd minute goal.
The Seawolves finished the match outshooting Radford 18-17, but only had three shots on goal. Casey had five shots to lead the team.
Stony Brook will make its home debut Thursday night against Sacred Heart at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at 7 p.m.
