Stony Brook falls at Villanova
Villanova, Pa. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team played a competitive 90-minute match with BIG EAST member Villanova, matching the Wildcats shot for shot, but the Seawolves ultimately fell short in a 4-1 loss Tuesday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Stony Brook.
Coach Ryan Anatol's Reaction
"I thought they were very direct, and we didn't do a good enough job competing for balls, and we got punished for it. We created a lot of chances, had more of the ball, got the score to within 2-1, but Villanova was scrappy and did a better job than us."
Goal Recaps
- Fernandes took a penalty kick in the 51st minute after freshman Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) was taken down in the box.
- Villanova scored once in the first half and three times in the second half. The first goal by Kyle Soroka came in the 23rd minute. The third goal came 33 seconds after Fernandes' penalty kick goal on a blast shot that was deflected in. Soroka tacked on a late goal with under four minutes to play.
The Numbers Game
- Fernandes' goal was his first of the year and is the early team leader in points with three. He now has 23 goals in his career and is SB's Div. I all-time leading goal scorer.
- Shots in the match were even at 14-14 and shots on goal at 6-6.
- Villanova's John Fogarty made five saves in net, including a diving stop of Stony Brook's Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y) in the first half that would have put the Seawolves on top 1-0.
- Fernandes and Schlesinger each had two shots on goal.
