Stony Brook shuts down New Hampshire
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Taryn Schoenbeck's first-half goal lifted the Stony Brook women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday at LaValle Stadium. Sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made seven saves for her second shutout of the season.
Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute, taking a cross-field pass from sophomore Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) and firing it home from the right wing just inside the left post. The goal was Schoenbeck's team-leading third of the season and was her first game-winner. The goal also helped Stony Brook earn an all-important victory in the conference standings as the team improved to 2-2-1 in the America East and 4-9-1 overall.
With the Seawolves up 1-0 in the second half, Morales stole the show. The sophomore tipped away a shot by Monique Lamotte on a breakaway with 39 minutes to play, before making an even better stop on Kristi Zarrilli in the closing seconds. Zarrilli directed a shot on target from point-blank range, but Morales dove to her right and did well to hold the ball as several UNH players eagerly awaited a rebound.
Sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with five shots, none better than an attempt that skipped inches wide of the post with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Nysch also had a great chance to add a second goal in the 54th minute, but her shot from the left wing was turned aside by UNH keeper Erica Correa. Stony Brook outshot New Hampshire, 17-14, on the day.
The Wildcats fell to 3-10-1 overall and 1-3-0 in conference with the defeat.
Stony Brook returns to action on Thursday for a home showdown against Boston University at 7 p.m.
