Stony Brook women's soccer nips Yale, 2-1

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Stella Norman (Castle Rock, Colo.) potted the game-winning goal with 3:39 remaining to break a 1-1 tie and help Stony Brook to its fourth straight victory on Sunday against Yale. Junior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) accounted for the Seawolves' first goal as the team improved to 4-1-1 on the season.

Coach's Reaction

"I think we're getting great leadership from our seniors right now. Sa'sha Kershaw is doing a tremendous job leading the team and being a role model with her play. Same with Caitlin (Pfeiffer) and Taryn (Schoenbeck). If you meld that with our freshmen coming in and having a huge impact on our team, as well as our depth and our ability to play more players than our opponents, it really helps us to be successful in these games."

Goal Recaps

Stony Brook jumped on top in the 31st minute off a corner kick. Freshman Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) played the ball diagonally back to freshman Kristen Baker (Easley, S.C.), who lined up a perfect cross to the far post for Nysch, who elevated and powered a header just under the crossbar.
The lead held until the 84th minute when Yale's Paula Hagopian collected a cross from Melissa Gavin on the left wing, and one-timed it home from the right side of the box.
Just 2:21 later, Stony Brook regained the lead, again off a corner kick. Senior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) and sophomore Regan Bosnyak (West Hartford, Conn.) exchanged passes in the corner, before Schoenbeck crossed it into the middle. The ball found its way through traffic and onto the foot of Norman, who tapped it in for the game-winner.

Stony Brook outshot Yale, 20-8
Keeper Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) made two stops, while Yale keeper Adele Jackson-Gibson stopped nine attempts.
