The U.S. U20 Women’s National Team made it look easy with a 10-0 win over Guatemala in the Cayman Islands on Monday night in the final group game at the CONCACAF U20 World Cup qualifying tournament.
The win clinches the group for the U.S., which moves on to face either Mexico or Trinidad & Tobago in the semifinals on Friday. The U20s finished group play by outscoring its opponents 19-0, and Monday’s demolition was the most impressive of the lot. McKenzie Meehan led the way with a hat trick on a night when seven different players scored. Brittany Basinger, Stephanie Amack, Rachel Hill, Margaret Purce and Savannah Jordan had a goal apiece, while substitute Mallory Weber added a brace on her U20 debut.
Of note is the fact that the bloated scoreline wildly skews the final grades, which makes the numbers more of a general suggestion as to the overall level of play on offer.
GK Jane Campbell, 7.5: Campbell’s night was as quiet as it gets. She charged out of her net once to corral a deep ball, but otherwise she wasn’t forced to make a single save. That said, a quiet night caught starter Katelyn Rowland napping against Costa Rica in the opener, and Campbell never had that problem.
RB Laura Liedle, 7.0: Solid, quiet night for Liedle on the right. Since she didn’t get forward much and Guatemala did little in the way of forward movement, she was rarely called into action. Which is generally a good thing where a defender is concerned.
