Sullivan ascent paves way for young talent
While the men’s game attempts to iron out its path forward, the women’s college game chugs along as healthy as ever. And that was reflected back in the vitality of the recently released TDS Freshman Top 100.
College soccer got a huge boost from the national team on Wednesday, when Stanford junior Andi Sullivan earned a start with the USWNT. Her quality performance was a big moment for young college players, more or less proving the cream of the crop can hack it at the highest level when given a chance. That capped a deserved path that took Sullivan from the youngest rungs of the YNT to the big time in the span of a few years. Suffice it to say, while Sullivan remains a city on a hill so to speak in terms of talent, she isn’t alone in the college soccer ranks in terms of deserving call-ups.
With that said, let’s take a look under the hood at some of Sullivan’s college compatriots and yank out three players who could (and probably should) join her in garnering full national team minutes in the near future. As the USWNT plunges forward in its new cycle toward the 2019 Women’s World Cup, this crew could help herald a new era for the national team.
The only criteria? No previous caps. We’re starting from scratch.
