Summers lifts Raiders past Owls, 1-0
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee soccer team (5-4-2, 2-1-0 C-USA) returned to its winning ways Friday evening at Florida Atlantic (2-7, 0-1-2 C-USA), defeating the Owls 1-0 in Conference USA action.
This marks MT’s fifth shutout victory and seventh shutout overall on the season. Friday’s contest proved to be a defensive effort for both teams as each squad recorded just one shot on goal; however the Blue Raiders made the most of theirs.
The lone goal of the match came during the 55th minute, when MT defender Emily Jorgenson passed to Grace Summers in the middle of the box. Summers then sent the ball past the Owl goalkeeper low to the left corner, giving Middle Tennessee a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Summers’ third of the season and first game-winner, while the assist marked Jorgenson’s second on the year.
FAU’s only shot on goal came just before halftime off the foot of Claire Emslie during the 43rd minute, but MT goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer collected the save. Brouwer went on to record her sixth complete game shutout of the season, improving to 5-4-2, while Owl keeper Courtney Zwetsch took the loss.
MT outshot FAU 9-6 with both teams recording four shots each in the opening frame. The Owls dominated the corner kick contest, taking four corners compared to the Blue Raiders’ one.
The Blue Raiders return to action Sunday, Oct. 6, traveling to Charlotte for a noon Conference USA matchup.
