Supp named Patriot League Rookie of the Week
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a crucial assist to set up the game-winning goal on Friday at Holy Cross, Lehigh women's soccer freshman Courtney Supp has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced on Monday. Supp assisted on junior Sidonie Warnecker's game-winner in the 85th minute, making a feed from the end line in front to Warnecker, who gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead, which proved to be the final. Supp joins classmate Rebecca Van Siclenas Mountain Hawks who won Rookie of the Week this season.
Supp's assist helped cap off an impressive end to the regular season by Lehigh. After digging itself out of an 0-4 hole and punching its ticket to the Patriot League Tournament for a third straight season, the fifth-seeded Mountain Hawks will travel to Bucknell on Tuesday to face the fourth-seeded Bison. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. After Lehigh's win over Holy Cross Friday, Lafayette defeated Loyola on Saturday afternoon to secure Lehigh's spot in the postseason. American then tied Army in the evening to give the Mountain Hawks the No. 5 seed for a second straight year.
Lehigh fell behind 1-0 in the 15th minute of Friday's contest, but junior Kayla Arestivo scored the equalizer in the 28th minute before Warnecker scored the game-winner at the 84:16 mark. Arestivo went on to be named first team All-Patriot League on Monday while senior Sabrina Mertz, who also assisted on Warnecker's game-winner (along with Supp), was named to the second team. Arestivo and Mertz lead Lehigh in goals (4) and points (10), with both playing their best at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Warnecker's goal marked her second-career game-winning goal at Holy Cross; she scored the game's only goal at Holy Cross in 2016. It was also Warnecker's first goal since Oct. 22, 2016 at Bucknell after missing all of last season due to injury.
The Mountain Hawks' offense has come alive, scoring nine goals over their last four games, with three multi-goal games in that span. This came after scoring multiple goals just once in the first 13 contests of 2018. Lehigh also ended last regular season by scoring multiple goals in three of its final four games.
Bucknell enters the league tournament with a 7-10-1 overall record and 5-4-0 mark in the Patriot League. The Bison are 4-5-0 at home and 3-5-1 on the road. Bucknell has lost three of its last four, with the only win coming at Lehigh by a 1-0 final. Most recently, the Bison dropped a 3-0 final to Navy, one game after falling at Boston University, 2-0. Jenna Marek leads Bucknell with four goals and eight points, including the game-winner against the Mountain Hawks. Two others own six points, each with two goals and two assists – Kate Henesey and Holly Burns. Theresa Adu-Attobrah has started all but one game in goal, tallying a 1.10 goals against average and 0.833 save percentage.
Lehigh and Bucknell have been very competitive in the all-time series, especially as of late. The Bison lead 16-11-3, with the first meeting coming in 1991, a 3-1 Bucknell victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1992 by a 2-0 final. Since 2010, Bucknell owns a slim 5-4-1 lead. The last three games have seen a tie, Lehigh win and Bucknell victory.
If the Mountain Hawks win on Tuesday, they would advance to the Patriot League Semifinals for the first time since 2012. The semifinals will be hosted by top seed Boston University on Friday, with the Terriers facing the lowest remaining seed. The highest remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinals will play second-seeded Colgate.
