Surging Saints Score Pivotal Win
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Women’s Soccer took a big step towards clinching its third straight MAAC Tournament berth Wednesday. Junior back Tara Sobierajski scored and senior goalkeeper Liz Rogan recorded her sixth shutout of the fall as the Saints shutout rival Marist 1-0 in their regular season home finale.
Sobierajski’s score would be all that Siena (8-6-3, 4-4-1) would need offensively to run its unbeaten streak to three. In the 24th minute, she perfectly bent in her corner kick from the right which somehow found its way untouched through a sea of red and white jerseys and into the goal.
The Saints dominated the first two-thirds of the match, out-shooting Marist (6-10-1, 5-3) 12-0 over the initial 67 minutes. Chasing the tying goal late, the Red Foxes got off all six of their markers over the final 23 minutes, but the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Rogan made all four of her saves late as Siena prevailed and thus guaranteed itself of finishing with a .500 or better record for the 11th time in the last 13 years.
Overall, the Saints held a 13-6 edge in shots and a 10-1 margin in corners. Siena’s defense was stout once again as the unit recorded its seventh clean sheet of the season, the program’s most since 2008. The Saints also lowered their stellar team goals against average to just 1.02, the program’s best mark in six years.
Makala Foley made all three of her saves in the first half for upstart Marist which was picked 10th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll after winning just twice all of last year, but could have clinched a tournament berth outright with a win.
Siena has the bye this weekend and heads into its final regular season match next Wednesday at Quinnipiac currently in sixth place in the MAAC Standings. The Saints are four points clear of the Bobcats, who play later tonight, for the sixth and final MAAC Tournament berth, although Quinnipiac has a match in hand on Siena.
