Surging Saints Secure Milestone Win
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Soccer won for the fifth time in its past six matches as the Saints defeated Saint Peter’s 2-1 on Senior Day at Siena Turf Field. Senior striker Junior Rosero and sophomore captain J.C. Obregon both scored for Siena which recorded the program’s milestone 250th all-time win.
Siena (6-6-2, 4-1) honored its eight seniors – seven of whom are true seniors – just prior to the team’s final weekend home match of the regular season. The Saints then promptly came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, registering 14 shots and seven corners.
Siena made the most of its opportunities, striking for both of its goals over the first 21 minutes of action. Rosero opened the scoring in the ninth minute on a give-and-go with freshman striker Conor McGlynn, in which Rosero broke down the right side and finished a tough angle shot just inside the near post.
Meanwhile Obregon proved to be a super sub in the 21st minute, scoring immediately after checking onto the field for the first time. Red-shirt sophomore back Tommaso Centemero set in a long free kick from near midfield which was flicked on by senior captain Uros Antic to Obregon who headed it inside the near right post.
The second half was more evenly played, and Saint Peter’s (3-9-2, 2-4) got on the board in the 78th minute on a score from Reece Lambert. But that would prove to be the only shot the Peacocks would be able to put on target on the afternoon thanks to a strong defensive effort from the Saints.
Siena out-shot Saint Peter’s 19-9 and held a 9-3 margin in corners. Jamie Cleland made five saves for the Peacocks.
The Saints return to action Wednesday for a first place showdown at MAAC frontrunner Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. The Bobcats currently sit atop the league standings at 5-1, with Siena just a half game back at the midway point of their conference slate.
